Rex Cafe

In Kuching, if you asked people about “REX”, mostly you would get answers like these,

a.) Kuching used to have cinema called “REX”, it was about 20 years ago.

b.) Rex’s Café, the best deep-fried prawn cake in town

I went to the REX Café at the Satok / Palm Road area the other day. Of course, to have some of the best deep-fried prawn cake lah. I think the current Rex Café is the 3rd place the owner has move to, I can’t remember anymore. But one thing I still can remember is that the very first time I had their prawn cake was 20 years ago!!!….Up until now, still the best. No matter how many times the owner has moved, the customers follow.

Alright, let me introduce you some of their drinks.

Special ABC - Something like Ice-Kacang. But instead of kacang, you get a mixture of fruits such as papaya, sago, pineapple, sea coconut, watermelon & etc.

3 Sour – A very tasty drink which mix sour plum, lime, lemon and salt & sugar into the drink. ( 4 sour drink is also available)


I ordered a Penang Belachan Beehun for myself, I never try a Penang style one before (I believes the stall selling it is also newly just in business, because I didn’t see it the last time I visited there..) Hmmm….good, a little bit different taste from the local Kuching style. But overall, still a nice food.


Lastly (I’ve saved the best for the last), I would like to introduce you the deep-fried prawn cake, the ‘brand’ of the shop! The prawn cake is very crispy and has a very nice taste, no kidding….I like it! If you look closer in the photo, you can see the whole prawn on cake, that’s what I call QUALITY FOOD. Besides prawn cake, others are also available like fish ball, chicken-butt, ‘ubi’ (or Sweet Kumara), Tou-Fu, squid and special fish cake (all in deep-fried mode).



Make yourself to be at Rex Café and taste out the best deep-fried prawn cake & others good food there in Kuching.

JOLLY KITCHEN AT HOCK LEE CENTER

The new Jolly Kitchen at Hock Lee Center.
The kitchen food court is HALAL, see the menu board.
Food court looks pretty clean and tidy ( maybe it is bcoz’ it is still brand new..)



The ‘Laksa Sarawak’ was still at an acceptable level, not bad. Secondly, I want to introduce you the ‘Roasted Duck Noodle’, the duck is very nice especially the skin, yummy! The noodle underneath was at average level only lah…


The drinks – oh ya….forgot to mention, I supposed the waiter also forgot about our drinks. Our drinks came 5 minutes AFTER our food!…What happened? I’m suspecting that is bcoz’ the food court is new, so there might be some mis-communication or ‘messy-hand-messy-leg’ causing the delays. Here we go, the Long-Ngan & Lychee drinks.

OPENING DAY OF BOULEVARD KUCHING

22 Dec 2007. Just would like to share some pictures taken at Boulevard Kuching this late afternoon.


Today is the first day of opening for Boulevard Kuching shopping center & hypermarket, but I would treat it as ‘semi-soft’ opening lah…because basically only 3 floors (ground, 1st & 2nd floors) are ready. The rest are yet to be open, such bowling center, shop lots at 3rd and etc.

But at least, Kenny Roger Roaster is in business. The hypermarket is also operating, and let me tell you, the things there are cheap…comparing to other supermarkets locally.

The interior design – the 1st impression giving to me is that, it has some Mid Valley’s feel…quite similar.

One thing I didn’t spot is the Christmas Tree…where is it? Where did they put it..aiyo…sayang lah….I only managed to see the real ‘Bakery House’ presented by FUJISAN Bakery.

Go.Fun Kee Bak Kut Teh

Wanna ask for a menu, it is available in paper form as usual. Complaining the wordings are too small…can’t read? Another form is placed on the wall, how’s the wordings now? Can see and start ordering now?

Basically, the menu is designed for you to customize your own pot of Bak Kut Teh. Order what you want into your pot and what you don’t want. Some side dish vegetables are also available. We ordered the Bean Sprout, nothing special…but a very ordinary home cook taste.


The drinks are more to Taiwanese drinks such as milk tea with all types of flavour. We ordered the green apple milk tea & the ordinary milk tea with jelly. Hmmm… good to have specially on the cooling rainy day like that day.

Lao Ya Keng ( 老爺間 )

Lao-Ya-Keng ( 老爺間 ) – is a legendary Chinese food court and at the same time is also a Chinese opera theater. The plays happen in most of the Chinese Festival, such as Moon Cake Fest, Bak-Chang Fest, ‘The Others’ Fest & etc. And the food is of course all year round, men need food everyday…hehehe…



The ‘Cha-Kueh’ (Chinese fried Rice Cake) there is best, only available in sweet flavour (normally Cha-Kueh has two flavour, sweet & salty). Cha-Kueh is a kind of cake made from rice, then cut into small pieces and fried it with ingredients with a big flat-based wok. You need to be early if you like to get them, coz’ normally the business will call it a day in a few hours time of operation. Business too good that the Cha-Kueh finish in hours time.



The ‘Fish Ball Yong Tou-Fu’ there is well known trademark of that food court. Just look that the pic, see how fruitful the bowl is. Worth the money!

Those above two dishes mentioned only available from late morning to early evening. There is another side dish I would like to mention here, i.e. the pork Satay, best of the best. No picture shown here, because when we arrived there at 4.00pm and it has already sold out!!!…no more orders for us. : (


Some thing extra that day, a friend and spotted a collapsing or should I say been terminating building, somewhere near the Old Court House, the location of where the new ‘Merdeka Plaza’ will be. I believes, the old building has already full taken down by now. It is time for us to start hoping for bigger, newer building in near future.

Friend's Birthday - Home Party

Recently, went to a friend's home birthday party.
Here is the Birthday girl, who was still busy preparing the food at 6.30pm~...last minute work! Still posing a "Victory" to the camera...

First session of the evening, buffet style.....here you go, fried rice, which is always a must in the casual home party.



Coming up is the roasted chicken...quite nice.




Then, we have spring-roll. Yeah..eaten, but can't really figure out what's inside...just eat!..hehehe..

Oh..this one is good...Sweet & Sour Fish. Dish of the Day.

The party ended about 3.00am in the morning. Yeap, 3.00am...
We had 3rd session after the BBQ mah...guess it....it is a 4 persons games, on a square table, one person one side of the table....a lot of cubicals on the table....a bit noisy some times....have u got??

Dinner at Akira Japanese Cuisine

It was a raining night, we decided to go somewhere indoor (plaza with carpark lah…to avoid the rain mah.) for dinner. So, we went to a ‘sort of ’ Sushi Bar last Friday night at Sarawak Plaza. Why I say ‘sort of ’? Because the sushi bar is real small and is isolated from the serving bar…like an island with rail at the surroundings.

People there are quite kind & friendly, service good! You know lah, Japanese service is always good, just short of one thing they didn’t do only, else it will be quite equivalent, ie. Bow when you come in and greet you with “shi-li-ma-seh”.



Look at the orders that we had…a lot? Don’t pray-pray man…still less than RM50 we spent, not to mention the RM2 car-parking fee.

Tea Time at Song Kheng Hai Food Court

4.00pm Tea Time at Song Kheng Hai Food Court, on Sunday. One of the best places to have the most localize, nice & cheap food in town. I bet you never seen/heard about these food before if you are not living in Kuching or never been to Kuching before.

The moment when you sit down on a chair at the food court, a very friendly lady will come to you and ask whether you want to order some drink. On a hot Sunday afternoon, I’ve order a fresh coconut water for my thirst. I remember once a Chinese Physician told me that taking a fresh coconut water can reduce the ‘heat gas’ inside your body almost immediately, and avoid sickness due to the ‘heat’. Besides fresh coconut water, you could order sugar cane juice or The Perfect Match of Coconut Water & Sugar Cane Juice. Nice too!





The next thing to do is, to go to the desired stalls and order the food….The ultimate Belachan Bee Hun, never heard before? OK, Belachan is a kind of spice that you can only find in Malaysia or nearby places. Bee Hun is rice noodle but slightly thinner, mostly imported from China. Belachan Bee Hun comes with boiled sotong & sliced cucumber too. Together with the secret soup and sauce, the taste is like ..mmm…WONDERFUL!




A side order of Belachan Bee Hun, RM1.00 of Century Egg, makes the Bee Hun tastier.





The remarkable Sotong-Kangkong, another food that you can’t get it elsewhere. By the name, you get Sotong & Kankong and another secret sauce with some crunched peanuts as toppings for the purpose of some crunchy feels. The absolutely non-fat dish (but a bit high cholesterol lah..)



Lastly, the very traditional & local food….introducing the local salad….ROJAK. You get a mixture of veges. & fruits (things like cucumber, ‘mangkuang’, ‘Tou-fu’, pineapple & etc.) in it with once more…secret sauce & crunched peanut. What I heard about the sauce is that, the sauce is made from prawn. But think-think, cannot relate the sauce to prawn, because the sauce is in black colour…how do they do that?? I don’t want to know :). Just eat it…
